Hi Joe,
Reviewing Kelly's profile again has helped me feel a little closer to her and a little closer to you.
I can only seem to reiterate again that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I know your world has stopped. You've been plugging away for months now. Just keep drawing in one breath after the other, then continure to put one foot in front of the other.
Thank you for staying in touch with the DS community through the long haul.

You are about to enter a journey for a lifetime. It isn't a journey that is always simple and without bumps in the road but it is a journey that will leave you feeling like you have been reborn. Remember the key ingredients to success are: water, walking, protein. Walk as much as you can without overdoing it to help with healing and soreness and sip water as often as you can to help with weight loss and to keep you hydrated. Do as your surgeon and nutritionist suggests and you will be fine in no time. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. JudyB

Things finally improved! After opting to take her slowly down off of the vent, they were able to succeed in getting Kelly off the ventilator at about 6:30pm this evening (6/29). Dr. Peters came in to discuss things with her and said he is leaving everything up to the pulmonologist to determine if this is a show-stopper. After initial talks, they seem to think that the slow approach will be the best method to take her off the vent and Dr. Peters, at least, is still up for doing the surgery. They are keeping Kelly overnight (so much for a 15-minute procedure!) and they will all discuss things further tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Kelly's husband, Joe, here... Just wanted to post an update on her surgery. She went in this morning to have the filter that Dr. Peters recommended she get to avoid possible clot issues.
Unfortunately, things did not go well... They had problems with the controlled sedation and had to go deeper. This led them to put her on a tube/vent to do the procedure. Very bad! When they tried to remove the tube after surgery, her SAT level dropped to 76. They've been forced to leave her vented and heavily sedated to keep her calm and under control. For those who may not know, being put on a ventilator is one of her worst fears - there is always a concern that she won't come off it easily, as has proven to be the case. They are hopeful that they can drop her off the oxygen slowly and possibly try to remove the tube later today. Part of this is likely a result of the sarcoidosis. Pending the review of her situation by the pulmonologist, her DS surgery may be cancelled because of the risk.
I'll try to post another udpate later. Not foreseeing this, we had brought our puppy along on the trip and I've got to juggle taking care of him as well as going to be with Kelly. If anyone who's local to the Residence Inn in Dickson City knows of a good last-minute dog sitter, please let me know - (cell - 703.395.5497). I may not be able to take your call immediately, but I'll try to get back to you when I can. For the moment, I'm going to check with the PetSmart that is just up the hill from the hotel.
Thanks in advance for your support and prayers for Kelly.
Joe

Hi Ro,
Thanks for the post. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease about 10 years ago. I became really hyperthyroid and the only option was to destroy my thyroid. Once that was done, I gained over 140 pounds in 5 years. I have since struggled to lose the weight. I've tried all the 'home remedies' and such to lose the weight and jumpstart my metabolism and nothing seems to help. I've been able to lose about 60 pounds but I'm stuck again. I'll check into the book you mentioned. I'm also curious if WLS works for people like me with no thyroid. Thanks! Kelly
— Kelly K.
03/09/05 09:50 AM
Hey Kelly..
I somehow stumbled onto your profile and saw that you have thyroid issues - no thyroid even? Wasn't sure, but I am hypothyroid.
My sister gave me a great book recently, called 'The Thyroid Diet' by Mary J. Shomon. It's been really interesting, and speaks a lot (maybe too much) to the fact that conventional medicine for thyroid hormone replacement is often ineffective, which is something I've long suspected as my meds never seem to be right. It gives some useful (and some over the top) suggestions on alternative therapies, and foods we can eat to enhance our thyroid hormone production.
May be worth checking out!
Best of luck to you..

Thanks Dame!!! How great that you should post to my surgery page. Your profile was a big part of my decision to proceed with surgery. You did a great job of giving the good, bad and ugly of WLS. It helped me to make an informed decision. Thanks for updating your profile so regularly. :)
